Vanuatu communities are reviving ancestral taro cultivation as a climate resilience strategy after severe cyclones devastated 96% of the island nation's crops in recent years. Water taro, cultivated in agroforestry pools protected by rainforest canopies, proved more resilient than imported cassava during storms, allowing communities with healthy taro crops to feed themselves and others when supply chains were cut off.
Over 170,000 people have been displaced across Syria's northeast following renewed hostilities in Aleppo, Al-Hasakeh, and Ar-Raqqa governorates, with many families fleeing for the second or third time. Humanitarian organizations are delivering multi-sector assistance through newly established corridors, though families face frigid winter conditions with limited access to water, warmth, and medical care.
Climate work continues despite federal rollbacks as organizations like Native Sun Community Power Development pivot strategies after losing Department of Energy funding for solar installations and EV charging networks. The Minnesota-based organization is refocusing on renewable energy workforce development in partnership with state governments, determined to continue infrastructure projects even if they take longer without federal support.
