Where the Impact Jobs Are (and Aren't) in 2025

The global job market is undergoing significant transformation in 2025. According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report, structural labor-market changes will impact nearly 22% of current jobs by 2030. 170 million new jobs will be created (14% increase). 92 million jobs will be displaced (8% decline). This results in a net increase of 78 million jobs globally. Technology remains the primary driver of these changes. Although it is important to note not everyone agrees with this forecast, some think the end of work for many people will be nearer and we need radically new social policies.

The impact sector shows promising growth. Green transition roles like Renewable Energy Engineers and Environmental Engineers are among the fastest-growing positions. Care economy jobs (nursing, social work) and education roles are also expanding significantly. Conversely, traditional administrative roles are rapidly disappearing. Data entry clerks, administrative secretaries, accounting clerks, and payroll specialists are projected to see the steepest declines. Upskilling remains crucial. Employers report that 39% of existing skill sets will be transformed by 2030. Technological literacy, AI, big data, and resilience are among the most valuable emerging skills.

The recent decision to slash USAID funding has led to an unprecedented disappearance of much of the development sector. 140,179 confirmed global jobs have been lost as of March 18, 2025. This affects workers in 46 U.S. states and Washington D.C. 83% of USAID programs (5,200 contracts) have been officially cancelled. Over 90% of USAID contracts (about 5,800) have been eliminated. This $60 billion reduction in overall U.S. foreign assistance has disrupted critical global programs.

The future of work is likely to be increasingly "gigified". More professionals will engage in short-term, flexible, or freelance work arrangements. This trend offers both opportunities and huge challenges for impact-focused individuals. It allows for diverse experiences and flexible schedules. However, it may also lead to job insecurity and reduced benefits.
